Welcome to Cayos Cochinos!

Welcome back to blogs from Cayos Cochinos for July 2023!

This is our second day on the island, and third day in Honduras. So far, the general consensus is that it is incredibly beautiful and very hot. The flight over the mountains, then the drive from San Pedro Sula to La Ceiba were lovely, and it was very cool to get to see our first glimpses of life and culture in Honduras.

Our first day on the island was even better. As we arrived at the island on the boat, we could see the crystal clear waters, immediately tempting us to get in and start swimming. We had lunch first though, rice and plantains with either fish, chicken, shrimp, or beef, and it was very tasty. Afterwards, we got in the water and did our first round of snorkeling, and as soon as we put our faces in the water, we were in heaven. The first things you start seeing are the gorgeous fish and corals. When you start getting closer, things only get prettier, as you begin to be able to see the worms, urchins, shrimp, and other invertebrates. I don’t think my words can do it justice, so I’ll just add my photos so you can see for yourself.

Dinner afterwards felt well earned after 3 hours of snorkeling, and the baleadas were a perfect meal. Isabelle and I went out on the dock after dinner and sat with a flashlight pointed at the water, watching the little fish come to eat the bugs it attracted.

Our first day was great, and I know everyone is incredibly excited to get back in the water and keep exploring!
